Flower walls have become a sought-after addition to wedding decor, particularly as stunning photo backdrops. They add a touch of romance, elegance and natural beauty to any wedding venue and make for a great photo opportunity for guests. While fresh flower walls are undeniably beautiful, they can be costly and challenging to maintain throughout a wedding day. However, fret not! In this blog post, I will share with you the steps I took to create a DIY flower wall for my own wedding, allowing you to create a breathtaking photo backdrop for your own wedding. You’ll achieve the picture-perfect setting you desire, while saving money and ensuring the longevity of your floral display. Let’s dive in and create a magical backdrop for your special day!
Materials Needed:
- Plastic grid wall frames ( I chose the largest size I could find and they fit stacked in a large suitcase – very important if your travelling for your special day)
- Silk flowers of your choice (varying sizes and colors)
- Peonies (more pinks, multi )
- Chrysanthemum
- Roses
- Hydrangeas (more pink)
- You can also check out your local craft stores or JoAnn Fabrics or Michaels for a broader assortment of flowers
- Wire cutters
- Floral wire or hot glue gun
- Command hooks or picture-hanging strips
- Measuring tape
- Optional: faux foliage, ribbons, or decorative elements
Step 1: Measure and Prepare
Begin by measuring the area where you plan to hang the flower wall. This will help determine the number of plastic grid wall frames needed. Additionally, make sure you have enough silk flowers to cover the entire wall. It’s always better to have some extras in case you want to add more depth or variety to your design.
Step 2: Prepare the Plastic Grid Wall Frames
Assemble the plastic grid wall frames according to the manufacturer’s instructions. These frames typically snap together easily, forming a sturdy grid structure. Connect multiple frames if necessary to fit your desired dimensions. Once assembled, ensure they are securely attached.
Step 3: Arrange and Trim Silk Flowers
Using wire cutters, separate the silk flowers from their stems. Take a moment to experiment with different arrangements directly on the grid frames. This step allows you to visualize how the final flower wall will look and make adjustments as needed. Consider mixing colors, shapes, and sizes for a more dynamic and realistic appearance. Trim any excess stem length, keeping in mind the depth you want to achieve.
Feel free to get creative and play around with different flower combinations and arrangements. Let your imagination run wild and make it truly your own. After all, your love story is one of a kind, and this backdrop should reflect that.
Step 4: Attach Silk Flowers to the Grid
Now comes the fun part—attaching the silk flowers to the plastic grid. You have two options for this: floral wire or a hot glue gun. If using floral wire, simply thread it through the back of each flower and twist it around the grid, securing it in place. I recommend using a hot glue gun since it is relatively quick and easy to do. The flower grids come with raised pin heads designed for you to be able to snap the flower heads onto place. This works well, however, they dont always stay secured and your fingertips will be sore from pushing down on the flower heads. Adding some hot glue to the tip ensures your work will stay together. Apply a small amount of glue to the back of each flower and press it firmly onto the grid. Be careful not to use excessive glue, as it may show through the petals.
Step 5: Fill the Grid and Add Depth
Continue attaching the silk flowers, filling up the entire grid frame. Make sure to cover any visible gaps or empty spaces. As you progress, step back and assess the overall arrangement, ensuring an even distribution of colors and sizes. For added depth and texture, consider including faux foliage, ribbons, or other decorative elements throughout the flower wall.
Step 6: Hang and Display
Once the flower wall is complete, it’s time to hang and display your creation. Use command hooks or picture-hanging strips to secure the grid frames onto the wall. Make sure the hooks/strips can support the weight of the flower wall. If necessary, seek assistance to ensure the frames are level and securely mounted.
That’s all it takes! This floral masterpiece is going to add a touch of pure magic to your special day and create the most incredible setting for capturing those unforgettable moments. And the best part? You didn’t break the bank to achieve it! So kudos to you for being budget-savvy without compromising on style and elegance.
So get ready to strike a pose, smile for the camera, and capture those precious memories against this dreamy backdrop. You’re about to embark on an incredible journey together, and this DIY flower wall is just the beginning.
Cheers to your happily ever after!
